I am working fervently (currently around 12+ hours in) on a digital scan of my latest painting. The man who scanned it for me does a great job putting it together as it was in 6 different scans! However the "light" from the scanner and the texture of the panel came through as lots and lots...and lots of little light blemishes. I took a quick photo of the painting as well, trying to avoid the large amount of time it would take and the possibility that the scanned image wont be salvageable. However the detail from the scan is just too great to pass up, the photo didn't even come close. I will do before and after pictures once I am done.
This image was done for the Eowyn v.s the WitchKing challenge over on ArtOrder, by Jon Schindehette. I had the idea to make the arms of the WK tangible unlike many of the classic images of him. I also wanted to show a more brutal, realistic moment, figuring most participants would do the posing right before battle with shield raised, etc. I wanted to show that Eowyn was downed and the WK however inhuman retained the qualities of a human (being that he once was), and after a "mere woman" defeats his "steed" and dismounts him, he opts for a bare-handed strangling kill. Eowyn's salvation is the half-buried sword she is straining for. My initial inspiration and first thought of composition was to make the capes and drapery take over and create the movement for the composition.
So, in retrospect I still think my concept was good, if I had the chance to do it all over I would stick with this idea. I would definitely change my composition though!
Here is a quick and dirty oil sketch I did in preparation, although this is slightly cropped in

In the end, I made the composition vertical and changed quite a few things after painting them.
